Spiritual Anti-Gravity

“One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life; that word is love.” -Sophocles

My brother Boaz is a compact, slim, yet physically fit guy. For many years now, at family weddings he has taken to having my larger and more massive father sit on his shoulders. The contrast of masses always amazes me. After carrying my father for many minutes, Boaz will say, “He was light.” My father will similarly echo, “I was thinking light.”

Is it possible for ones feelings or emotions to somehow affect the inexorable pull of gravity? The Ohr Hachayim seems to imply so.

The Ohr Hachayim explains that in the process of creation, God could have chosen from an infinite number of geometric arrangements. He chose a sphere that orbits the sun and turns on its own axis daily. The Ohr Hachayim explains that every being therefore starts off spiritually and physically equidistant from God (who is really everywhere, though he is most often identified with the Heavens). There is no advantage to country or time zone. Every thing (the Ohr Hachayim includes mineral, vegetable and animal as well) pines for God to the limit of their capacity, from around the globe.

The pull of gravity, the equal (more or less) force that it exerts on all upon the planet is, according to the Ohr Hachayim, also a spiritual force. Our thoughts, emotional and spiritual condition can have an impact on this universal power. It is apparent that when a person is depressed, they feel heavier, while a happier person will be lighter on their feet. It may not only be psychological, there may be some physiological aspects as well (any physicists out there want to do a study?).

May we be able to lighten our spirits and our weight.

Searching for Eden

“Where the apple reddens never pry — lest we lose our Edens, Eve and I.” -Robert Browning

Ever since Man’s banishment from the Garden of Eden, we have sought to rediscover the lost paradise. Scientists, scholars and archeologists have proposed a number of locations for the historic Eden, yet none have been able to confirm (how would they do so?) where the ancient home of Adam and Eve is.

One of the more popular suggestions places the Garden of Eden near modern-day Kuwait, between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, the only easily identifiable rivers listed in the creation story. Others have placed it in Turkey between the headwaters of those two rivers.

One of my favorite suggestions is that Israel is the site of the Garden of Eden, based on satellite imaging of pre-flood riverbeds that emanate from the Great Rift we’re sitting on.

The Ibn Ezra however, provides an unusual clue as to where he thinks the Garden of Eden was situated. He states that it was on the equator, where days and nights are equivalent throughout the year. This corresponds exactly with one of the most abundant sites for ancient human fossils, Lake Turkana in Kenya, which is situated on the equator and has been termed by anthropologists “the cradle of humanity.”

However, perhaps more important then finding the ancient fossils of the Garden of Eden, would be to create our own living, existential paradise on earth.

“Very Good” Creation

“Teamwork is so important that it is virtually impossible for you to reach the heights of your capabilities or make the money that you want without becoming very good at it.” -Brian Tracy

In a perfect world, one might wonder why God didn’t create us in a much more self-sufficient fashion. Why are we so dependent on others? Why are we always in need of the help of professionals, workers, and a slew of specialized and non-specialized people in order to accomplish almost anything in our daily lives?

Is this some lack in the divine design? Was this an oversight in God’s master plan? Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, also known as the Netziv, (1816-1893), implies that this dependency is exactly what God wanted.

In Genesis 1:31 God oversees the whole of his creation efforts at the end of the sixth day. He states that it is “very good.” The Netziv explains that each individual component of creation was “good.” However, it is the combination of all the different elements which complement each other that makes creation “very good.”

May we always be there to contribute our particular capabilities to creation and may we gladly accept the assistance of others when we need it.

The Source of Gravitas

“If a man happens to find himself, he has a mansion which he can inhabit with dignity all the days of his life.” -James A. Michener

Gravitas, Pietas, Dignitas and Virtus are the classic Roman virtues whose Latin names have survived to English and many other languages since. Both gravitas and dignitas underscore the fact that the more serious or successful a person becomes, the weightier they become (and I don’t mean pounds-wise, though there is certainly a literary connection).

Ibn Ezra (to Genesis 13:2) brings our attention to the antecedent to that concept from the Hebrew language and specifically from the story of Abraham.

“And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South. And Abram was very heavy in cattle, in silver, and in gold.” Genesis 13:1-2

Ibn Ezra explains that to be weighed down with money, with livestock, etc. leads to honor. According to him, the term for honor (kavod in Hebrew) is derived from the word heavy (kaved). Likewise, the opposite of honor, disgrace (kalon) stems from the word light (kal).

So when someone calls another a lightweight, small fry, inconsequential, you now know that it stems from the Hebrew terms of light and disgraced. Likewise, heavy-hitters, big shots, heavy-duty (kaved) are all deserving of honor (kavod), because of their personal gravitas.

Super-blessed

"Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage, and confidence." -Og Mandino

After the failures of Adam, Noah and successive generations we are finally introduced to the first Patriarch, the founder of our nation, Abraham.

He was an outstanding personality. He rose to a higher calling against all opinion, pressure and odds. In return for his loyalty, his courage, his goodness and his example, God blesses Abraham.

The Baal Haturim on Genesis 12:2 enumerates seven blessings with which Abraham was graced:

1. Abraham will become a Nation

2. Abraham will receive great wealth.

3. Abraham will receive a new name (Abram was switched to Abraham)

4. Abraham himself will be considered a blessing.

5. Whoever will bless Abraham, God will ensure that they in turn are also blessed.

6. Enemies will be cursed.

7. All families of the world will be blessed by Abraham.

May we live up to the example of Abraham and also participate in his blessings.
