In the Book of Lamentations, Eicha, the prophet Jeremiah records his impressions of the destructions of Jerusalem and the First Temple, and the exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel. It is a very emotional book in which the prophet expresses feelings of intense loneliness, a sense of utter abandonment, desolation, desecration of that which was sacred, pain and suffering. There are times when he even seems to challenge God for allowing it to happen, yet it also contains elements of prayer, faith and hope.

Parashat Mattot presents us with considerable challenges. Much of it is very technical in nature, and seems to contain three distinct, seemingly disconnected chapters: Chapter 30 discusses laws of vows, chapter 31 deals with the war against the Midianites and the spoils from the war, and chapter 32 narrates the request and plan for the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and Menashe to act as shock-troops and then settle land on the eastern side of the Jordan.

"לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר ה' אַתֶּם לֹא שְׁמַעְתֶּם אֵלַי לִקְרֹא דְרוֹר אִישׁ לְאָחִיו וְאִישׁ לְרֵעֵהוּ הִנְנִי קֹרֵא לָכֶם דְּרוֹר נְאֻם ה' אֶל הַחֶרֶב אֶל הַדֶּבֶר וְאֶל הָרָעָב וְנָתַתִּי אֶתְכֶם לזועה [לְזַעֲוָה] לְכֹל מַמְלְכוֹת הָאָרֶץ" (ירמיהו ל"ד, יז)

"הנני קורא לכם דרור".

כי מי שהוא עבד ה' הוא חפשי מן המקרים ואין דבר אחר שולט עליו,

וכשיוצא חפשי מרשות ה' הוא תחת רשות המקרים

כישראלי שזוכה לטייל בענתות ובירושלים בראש מורם, אחרי שה' שבר עול גלות מעל צווארינו, קשה לי נפשית לקרוא פרקי כניעה אלו.

ה' מצווה את ירמיהו ללכת עם עול על צווארו כדי לסמל את הצורך להכנע לבבל. ירמיהו מסביר לאנשי יהודה שאי אפשר להמלט מן הפורענות. המפתח להישרדות בזמן הפורענות הוא להבין שזהו עונש, ולהרכין את הראש. 

בפרק שלפנינו מתואר משפט, אשר פרק ז' מהווה עבורו פתיח. לפנינו הזדמנות מיוחדת להשוות נבואת תוכחה לנבואת סיפור.

ירמיהו עומד בפתח המקדש ומנבא על המקדש שיחרב כמו שילה מה שמעורר מהומה וויכוח נרחב. פרק כ"ו ממחיש עד כמה גדול חוסר הוודאות לגבי אמיתות הנבואה.

The difference of one person, even amongst many others, makes a world of a difference.
