Rav Yehuda Amital zt”l explained that Noach feared a fundamental change in human beings’ status after the flood.  After all, humankind had proven itself unworthy of inhabiting the earth, and during the flood, a small representation of people survived in the ark just like all species of animals.

The world of Adam – where everything was put in place for him without his active involvement – did not endure, but the world of Noach, which he helped create, continues to exist.

What might be the significance of these hopes and expectations that were sparked by Noach’s birth and then shattered? The tragic ending to the story of this generation perhaps teaches that we cannot look to technological breakthroughs for a source of joy and gratification.

Noach’s commitment to farming was, in itself, admirable.  Charged with the responsibility of rebuilding the earth after the flood, Noach invested himself in this endeavor and set out to renew the land’s productivity and fertility.  From the Ramban’s description, however, it appears that Noach was too emotionally invested, to the point where farming became an end unto itself.

Noach is criticized for his failure to pray on his generation’s behalf, despite his probable concern to maintain his opposition to the corrupt lifestyle of his contemporaries.  We are expected to show care, concern and empathy for people even if we  reject their beliefs and conduct.  As we learn from Avraham,  there should be no conflict between firm ideological opposition and sincere love and concern.

The phrase “tamim haya be-dorotav” means that Noach was “humble in his generations.” That is to say, despite his piety, and the vast difference in moral and spiritual stature between him and his contemporaries, Noach remained humble and self-effacing. He did not pride himself for his righteousness or look condescendingly upon others.

Too many people follow the example of Cham, celebrating the exposure of the “erva” of generally good people.  When they see a “Noach” in his moment of disgrace, they rush to publicize their findings as quickly, as loudly, and as dramatically as possible.

Are vineyards so bad? Was Noah's decision to plant one problematic?   An activity which is perfectly valid and legitimate per se, and even worthwhile and beneficial, becomes worthy of criticism if there are other, more pressing needs that deserve priority.

What is the connection between Noah's ark and the Mishkan?

בתודעה הרווחת עוד מימים קדומים, 'עשרת השבטים' גלו כולם ועקבותיהם אבדו. אבל זה פשוט לא נכון.
