Summary
Karkemish is a Hittite city on the banks of Nehar Prat (the Euphrates River).
Currently identified with Jerablus (G. Smith).
- During the reign of King Yoshiahu, Pharaoh Nekho went to war against Karkemish (II Chronicles 35, 20).
- Pharaoh Nekho was later defeated by Nebukhadnezzar next to the walls of Karkemish (Jeremiah 46, 2).
Archaelogy:
Remnants from the Aramaean- Hittite hybrid culture were found at Karkemish, along with inscriptions in Hittite hieroglyphs, reliefs of Hittite gods, and artistic works that were influenced by the style of Ashur (Assyria).
