Summary

Emek Yizre'el is a valley in the territory of the tribe of Yissachar, named for the city Yizre'el, identified with Tel Yizre'el (Y. Schwartz).

  • Gideon fought against Midian in Emek Yizre'el (Judges 6:33)
  • Shaul's final battle against the Philistines was in Emek Yizre'el (I Samuel 29:1-11)
  • Yizre'el appears in the list of  King Shlomo's outposts (I Kings 4:12), and continued to serve as an outpost for various kings of Israel: Ahav (e.g. I Kings 18:4, 12), Izevel (e.g. I Kings 21:23), Yoram (II Kings 8:29; 9:15-17).
  • Navot, the owner of the vineyard which Ahav coveted, was from Yizre'el (I Kings 21:2).
  • Yizre'el also features in prophecies by Hoshea (e.g. Hosea 1:4-5).
