The Mediterranean Sea is called by various names, such as: the Great Sea (HaGadol), the Final Sea (HaAharon), the Sea of Jaffa(Yafo), and the Sea of the Philistines (Plishtim).

The Mediterranean Sea is mentioned as the western border of the Land of Israel and of the tribal territorial inheritance of Yehuda.

• Yehezkel refers to the Mediterranean Sea as the border of the tribal lands of Gad in future times (Ezekiel 48, 28).
• Cedar wood was brought from Lebanon via the Mediterranean Sea for the building of the First and Second Temples (II Chronicles 2, 15; Ezra 3, 7).
