A city of Leviim and a City of Refuge; identified as Tel a-Ramit in the Northern Gilead (Nelson Glick).

Ramot Gilead was a city of Leviim descended from the family of Merari (Joshua 21, 38; I Chronicles 6, 65) and a City of Refuge (Deuteronomy 4, 43; Joshua 20, 8).

During King Shlomo’s reign, Ramot Gilead was the residence of the royal official Ben Gever, who governed the sixth district, which included the northern Gilead and part of Bashan (I Kings 4, 13).

In the era of the Israelite Monarchy, the Ramot Gilead region became an area of conflict with Aram-Damascus, and during Ahav’s reign, Ramot Gilead was under Aramean control.

King Ahav died during the attempt to return Ramat Gilead to Israel in the war between Ahav and Aram I Kings 22). Ahav’s son Yoram also waged war against Aram at Ramot Gilead. Yoram sustained injuries there and returned to Yezre’el to recuperate.

While in Ramot Gilead, Elisha anointed Yehu ben Nimshi as king.

רמות גלעד הייתה עיר לויים ממשפחת מררי (יהושע כא, לח; דברי הימים א' ו, סה) ועיר מקלט (דברים ד מג; יהושע, כ, ח). בימי שלמה הייתה מקום מושבו של נציבו בן גבר שמשל במחוז השישי שכלל כנראה את צפון הגלעד וחלק מן הבשן (מלכים א' ד, יג).

בתקופת ממלכת ישראל הפך אזור רמות גלעד לאזור מריבה עם ארם דמשק, ובתקופת אחאב רמות גלעד הייתה תחת שלטון ארמי. במלחמה בין אחאב לארמים בניסיון להשיב את רמות גלעד לישראל מצא אחאב את מותו (מלכים א' כב). גם בנו יורם ערך מלחמה נגד הארמים ברמות גלעד ושם נפצע וחזר ליזרעאל על מנת להתרפא. בחזית ברמות גלעד משח נער אלישע הנביא, את יהוא בן נמשי למלך.
