  • According to the book of Bereisheet, Mitzrayim (Hebrew for Egypt) is the son of  Ham (Genesis 10, 6).
  • Due to Egypt's vast wealth, Egypt served as a haven for those trying to escape famines of Canaan (Genesis 12, 10; Exodus 1, 1).
  • The enslavement of Bnei Yisrael in Egypt and the miraculous exodus story are foundational events in the heritage of Israel (Exodus 1-9).
