Summary

Mahanayyim is a city in the Gilead region, on the border between Gad and Menashe.

Currently identified with Tel edh-Dhahab el Gharbi (Y. Aharoni).

  • Yaakov saw Divine messengers at Mahanayyim while returning from Paddan Aram (Genesis 32, 2).
  • Mahanayyim was designated as a city of Levites within the tribal territory of Gad (Joshua 21, 36; I Chronicles 6, 61).
  • Avner ben Ner, Shaul's  army general, crowned Ishboshet ben Shaul as king over Israel at Mahanayyim (II Samuel 2, 8).
  • King David fled to Mahanayyim during the rebellion of his son Avshalom (II Samuel 17; I Kings 2, 8). During this time Shuvi ben Nahash, Makhir ben Amiel, and Barzilai of Gilead arrived to bring food and sustenance to David and his troops (II Samuel 17, 27; II Samuel 19; 33)..
