Summary
Timnah is located in the hills of Yehuda.
Currently identified with Tel Betesh, next to Tel Shahar (Encyclopedia Mikrait).
- In the story of Yehuda and Tamar, Yehuda meets Tamar on the way to Timna (Genesis 38, 13-15).
- Timna is mentioned as a one of the border towns of Yehuda (Joshua 15, 57).
- During the era of the Shoftim, Timna was settled by Philistines. Shimshon journeys to Timna and marries one of the Philistine women (Judges 14, 1-5).
- During the monarchic period, Yehuda rules over Timna. During the reign of Ahaz, Timna is re-captured by Philistines, albeit for a short period (II Chronicles 28, 18).
- Archaeological excavations from Timna have revealed many artifacts from the monarchic period, including skeins of cloth - hinting to the employment of the inhabitants, and epigraphic material in Ancient Hebrew. Timna appears to have been destroyed in an enormous fire around the end of the period of the First Mikdash.
