Summary

Mamre (Eilonei Mamre) is the dwelling place of Avraham and Yitzhak, next to Hevron.

Currently identified with Hirbet Ramat al-Halil (according to local tradition).

  • Avraham built an altar at Mamre (Genesis 13, 18).
  • The fugitive from the war between the four and five kings escaped to Mamre and told Avraham that Lot was captured (Genesis 14, 13).
  • Avraham was sitting in front of his tent at Mamre when the three messengers arrived (Genesis 18, 1).
  • When Yaakov returned from Paddan Aram to his father Yitzhak, he came to Mamre (Genesis 35, 27).
